NetGear Stora and Mac Time Machine
I purchased a Netgear Stora a few months back for keeping files such as photos and other items on, along with that idea was that I might also want to backup some information from hard disks. It turns out that the information from Apple and Netgear isn't fully accurate. You will find that If you use the Netgear Computer backup utility that you may have installed on your Mac that it will make some apparent connection to your Stora and then engage Time Machine, this all out appears to not work, I thought it might be a firewall issue, SMB vs AFP connection standards but I could not find anything that helped, each idea I found lead me a little closer but finally I found in the Netgear forums an answer. If you follow this link and check out the response from snooplewand it will provide you with an answer that seems to have worked with my set up.
Some important points I have to say are in the creation of the image and just where on the Stora to place the image. Apparently most people have found the default backup tool when they got it to work it only backed up 200MB, but this allows you to break that limit, I set mine to 300GB for a useful start. I found it straight forward and after many struggles with following what Netgear suggests with the backup utility was just a failure, I now have happiness. I was also being driven by the need that I was going to have the Mac Hard Drive replaced next week as it is slowly failing.
Perhaps by writing about this I might help someone else.
